Cottingley Fairies
21/1/19
The Cottingley Fairies were a series of figures that appeared in five photographs that became famous in the early 20th Century. They are named for the village of Cottingley in England and the photos were taken by young cousins Elsie Wright & Frances Griffiths. Author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle brought the photos to the public's attention after using them as an illustration for an article on fairies.
It was later revealed in the early 1980s that the photographs were faked and the fairies were nothing more than cardboard cutouts, but Frances maintained that the fifth photograph in the series was genuine. The photographs and cameras are displayed at the National Science and Media Museum in Bradford, England.
