Our Volunteers’ Charter
The Edinburgh Skeptics Society is a member of the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations (SCVO), and we strive to abide by best practice in recruiting and supporting the people who volunteer with us.
We are all volunteers at Edinburgh Skeptics: no-one is paid and and no-one makes any money out of it. Organising around 60 events per year takes a lot of time and effort. We are always on the lookout for volunteers to help run events, submit ideas and suggestions, and to potentially - if you’re interested - join our committee after you’ve learned the ropes.
If you have an interest in skepticism or science and you’d like to get involved then please have a chat with one of our staff members at an event.
The Management Committee will:
-
Give you clear guidance and instructions on your role.
-
Be accessible so you can seek advice or ask questions.
-
Provide you with whatever support you need to do your tasks.
As a volunteer it is expected that you will:
-
Stick to commitments and do what you've said you will do.
-
Give early notice, as early as possible, if for any reason you can't do what you've said you will do.
-
Ask for help and advice when you need it - volunteering should be rewarding so don't struggle on alone.
Volunteer Code of Conduct
When "on duty" the Committee and Volunteers alike should:
-
Respect people and challenge ideas.
-
Be courteous and polite to our visitors - they’re the reason why we’re here.
-
If you’re ever unsure of anything one of the Committee is a question away - just ask!
-
Enjoy yourself! That’s why we all do this - if it isn’t fun anymore and you’d like to discuss your role you are more than welcome and there will be no judgments from anyone.
