Deepak Chopra

13/7/19

Indian Born, US author, alt-med practitioner and actual qualified medical doctor Deepak Chopra is infamous for his promotion of 'quantum woo'. He has made a large fortune writing books, and after appearing on Oprah's chat show in 1993 (due to his friendship with Michael Jackson) his book sales exploded. Chopra came to the US in 1970 and was a resident in various hospitals in Boston. In 1981 on a visit to India he took up Ayurvedic Medicine and became a follower of the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. He returned to the US and founded the Maharishi Ayur-Veda Health Center in Lancaster, Massachusetts which soon gained some celebrity clients such as Elizabeth Taylor.

Chopra's Ageless Body, Timeless Mind: The Quantum Alternative to Growing Old was published in 1993 and after he appeared on Oprah, he became a prominent Alt-med peddler selling herbal supplements, massage oils, books, videos and courses. A year's worth of products for "anti-ageing" can cost up to $10,000. Chopra believes that a person may attain "perfect health", a condition "that is free from disease, that never feels pain", and "that cannot age or die". He has attempted to marry quantum physics with mystical "consciousness" and spiritual wellbeing, using quasi-scientific gibberish to make serious sounding statements about life the universe and everything. In his book Quantum Healing, Chopra stated the conclusion that quantum entanglement links everything in the Universe, and therefore it must create consciousness.

According to physicist Robert Carroll, he "charges $25,000 per lecture performance, where he spouts a few platitudes and gives spiritual advice while warning against the ill effects of materialism". One of the funniest things on the internet is the Wisdom of Chopra random quote generator started and maintained by Tom Williamson of Merseyside Skeptics. It creates random chopra-sounding sentences that are basically indistinguishable from the real bollocks and challenges you to tell the difference. http://wisdomofchopra.com/
