Dowsing

4/1/19

Dowsing is the belief that by using certain quasi-supernatural tools, someone can find water (or sometimes other substances) underground or hidden. Often flexible rods or pendulums are held in front of them and the user interprets the natural small movements generated as being indicative of water or whatever they are searching for.

Despite its long history and multiple scientific tests, the ability of its proponents to demonstrate their claims under test conditions has never been shown.

Any non-natural movement of the pendulum or sticks is believed to be an artifice of the well understood psychological phenomena of the ideomotor effect - whereby users inadvertently direct the mechanism to move without realising it.
